NORA FISCHER An artist who has sought a medium to express her vision of space, structure and color. "Early on, it seemed natural to use those artistic inclinations in larger spaces, to design interiors and furniture—and I did that for 20 years. Ultimately, though, I found it more satisfying to move to the micro view, to create jewelry" Her latest works are in fact "small constructions," using the body as their organic setting. Some necklaces resemble silver latticework and are edged with pearls. Covering the decolletage, the necklaces are sculptures that frame and extend the reflected light on the pearls, or light traveling through the prismatic, semiprecious stones. In her well received Geometric Collection, Ms. Fischer presents playful nano-sculptures incorporating sterling frames and wire work. The wit of each piece relies on the balance of the open and closed. Wearing her jewelry compares to placing a sculpture in a bare, well lit room. By highlighting intimate spaces, and juxtaposing the organic with the structural world, Ms. Fischer also brings architectural discipline to jewelry making. "It is not a new idea: The rigors of construction have dominated fashion design from time to time throughout history. Incorporating architectural principles seems appropriate, too, for someone from Washington, D.C., which is where I live" In the capital, monumental structures dominate the view, even though the action really occurs inside—in lobbies, living rooms, halls of power, private homes, and on the floor of the House and Senate. As Washington also combines tradition and innovation, Ms. Fischer fashions new forms for pearls. Her work has been described as sharply innovative, embedded in design, playful with negative space—in short, “not your grandmother’s pearls.” All materials are natural and thus show slight variations. Also, all pieces are one of a kind or limited editions. As they are all handmade there may be slight variations. |
